My mom was telling me today about her job (she works retail) and how the new manager threw away a bunch of silverware in the garbage because certain pieces from the set were lost or stolen. A cop was passing by and told her why didn’t she just round them up and give them to charity organization like Camilla House or something instead of just tossing them. The manager lady said she wasn’t suppose to do that.
I remember something like this from before. A friend of mine who worked at Starbucks and at the end of the day they had to toss out all the food that didn’t sell and weren’t allowed to give them to the homeless or something.
I’m sure there’s some kind of liability somewhere that prompts these companies to do these things, but I think we can all agree that it really just sounds like a bunch of heartless corporate bullshit. I’m sure there’s people out there who would dive into a dumpster for that perfectly wrapped tuna salad Starbucks is throwing out. And I’m sure there’s someone at Camilla’s house who would be happy to receive a bunch of mismatched brand new silverware.
Let’s go Green. Let’s recycle. Yes. And let’s stop letting companies throw away perfectly good merchandise as well. That’s part of the landfill problem surely.
